This is a lovely piece of Malachite from Zaire, measuring approximately 3.6 cm long. This carbonate mineral has been used for its green pigment, and as a decorative stone for thousands of years. The word 'malachite' is believed to have derived from one of two sources:
 
  1. the Greek word 'molochitis' meaning leaf of the mallow plant
  2. the Hebrew word 'mal'ach' meaning angel or messenger of God
